Configuration error during install

Hi,

I am trying to install the full version of Magento. When I am installing it came up with a few files that need to be changed to writable…

“Ensure that the file magento/var/.htaccess, the directories magento/app/etc, magento/var, and all the directories under magento/media are writable by the web server. “

So I change several of them which was fine, but one does not want to change, whatever I do.

“Path “/var/www/vhosts/thewhiskyspecialist.com/httpdocs/var/session/sess_qpu7jf2isjo0nf5t7fufqu4ns6” must be writable.”

I keep on changing the settings in my FTP but they wont stick, it just changes back and I cant move on with the install.

Any way I can get around this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, rather new to Magneto.

Thanks

Mike

Did you make the var/sessions/ folder writable by the web server or just the single session file? The entire directory must be writable.

On a sidenote, you might want to consider running the PHP/webserver process under the same user as the file owner e.g. using suPHP/suEXEC. This way you don’t have to grant elevated permissions to those folders, which is considered a bad thing security wise.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I made the files writeable via FTP, but for some reason this file wont stick on the settings that I set? The other did fine?

Is there a way around this, currently stuck at the installation area!! And cant go any further, I have tried to install the files again and get the same problem…

If you could help me find a solution to just get past this area that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like you are setting the permissions on the specific files. Instead, set permissions on the directory var/sessions/ and var/cache/

Hi,

Thanks for the info, I managed to get everything installed and have been working on a new store, everything seems very good so far, very impressed.

I am still having permission issues though, for some reason I am not getting it to change, could it have something to do with my computer itself? I am trying to install addthis through the Magento Manager but it wont allow me, I use Wise FTP, can you advise how I can allow the permission properly?

One other issue.

I am working on attributes to have a good filter for the products.. Shop by.

I have products that all vary in age, for example 1 year old to 50 year old (whisky) I dont want there to be a massive list of ages, but would rather have a drop down box for the customer to choose, how would I achieve this?

Many Thanks

Mike
