If you follow the instructions found at E-Commerce Gorilla Magento Upgrade Guide you should have no problem updating your installation. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

There are tons of tutorials, manuals and simple step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade Magento version to the newest one, but of course, if you won’t do that manually, since can take weeks if not months, ( you’ll be lucky to cope with it till New Year party) plus you won’t be sure to check all the info while moving it into the store. You can also move data using Cart2Cart , actually , it is not free, but this way you will move mostly all data pretty fast. It would only take a couple of hours, ( in my case it took 3 hours to transfer over 2000 products) . so it is up to you

I find that the cleanest, most reliable way of upgrading Magento is the clean install method. Back everything up, download the new version you want locally, and point it at a copy of the live DB also locally, which will perform the upgrade when you hit index.php. Add in the templates, while doing a three way diff with the base/default versions, you can catch anything that needs updating, and then install the modules, making sure they’re compatible with the version you’re upgrading to. Make sure other files like favicon, changed htaccess etc are copied over. Test thoroughly, and if you’re happy with it, block access to the live website, take yet another backup, and upload the updated code and point it at the live DB to perform the upgrade. You can then put the website live.
