I am having trouble getting the information in my drop-down menu to be searchable. I have sizes in the drop-down menu and each size for each item has a unique catalog number. I can’t figure out what code to use that will allow for customers to search for those unique catalog number and show the main item page for that drop-down item.

In the admin go to the manage products page and find the Child Products. You need edit them so their visibility is set to search. This will allow them to be displayed in the search results.

From there you need to redirect from the child page to the parent page. There are two ways of doing this, either a javascript redirect on the page, a php redirect in the controller. The link below goes through the different ways of setting this up

As a variant, you can try the ready extension Search AutoComplete & Suggest Pro. Check this one http://mirasvit.com/magento-extensions/search-autocomplete-suggestions.html..
