Could barcode scanning be integrated into Magento?

barcode scanners usually just enter text into fields for these kinds of apps.  Would you want to scan upc codes or item codes?  Either way, that would be a matter of looking up items by s specific value.

Short answer, yes.
Long answer, define integrated?  What exactly are you trying to do?

I’ve the same question.

my customer needs to use a barcode scanner to manage the items of his store.
for examle would be nice if the barcode scanner reading the barcode creates (authomatically) the sku of the product in magento (or eventually the id) .

is it possible ?
I shall I do that?

I solved out in the easiest way:

any USB barcode scanner has a “keyboard mode”, that “read and write\” your barcodes as if you insert them by typing.
so if you point your scanner on the SKU field in your magento backend, it scans your barcode and this evoid you to copy your codes mannually.

if you need a real “integration” ,such as printing your codes, or assign new codes to your items, there are some extension to be conseder, but I didn’t have the need.
