So the Backup Tool has a major bug?! Where should this be reported?

This happened to me too. Why in the world would the backup tool change file permissions? Very frustrating.

I’m seconding this question.  Why does running a backup tool change file permissions and hose your store?

What’s the final word on fixing this, short and long term?

IT´S A MAYOR ISSUE OF THE MAGENTO PLATFORM.

The problem comes about because Magento Backup sets permissions on files.

The offending piece of work is lib/Mage/Archive/Helper/File.php

In it you find a function public function open($mode = \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’w+\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’, $chmod = 0666)

This causes issues where permissions are changed globally.

If you must use Magento\\\\\\\’s site crippling backup, then you must run a script to set the file/folder permissions back.

Reseting file permmissions

http://blog.onlinebizsoft.com/magento-solved-internal-server-error-500-error/

Try that link, I fixed my issue by changing the index.php permissions to 755 and now backend and front end are now up smile

I am having this issue. Not sure what to do now.  Step-by-step instructions or help is GREATLY appreciated.

This is the error:
ERROR 500 - INTERNAL SERVER ERROR
Why am I seeing this page?
Is there anything that I can do?
Understanding Filesystem Permissions
How to modify your .htaccess file
How to modify file and directory permissions

Site was fine. I used system backup and now cannot access the site or admin panel at all.

Thank you.

UPDATE:
I was able to reset the Number to 0644. However, should ALL the .php and .html files be set to 644 or should some of them stay at 666? Thanks!
