After upgrade to magento 1.7, System-Configuration give me this fatal error:

‘Mage_Adminhtml_Block_Customer_System_Config_Validatevat’ not found

It sounds like one of the installed extensions is not compatible with Magento v1.7. Disable or remove the extension that deals with VAT and try. Or you might want to disable all the extensions you have. If Magento didn’t complain, then install the extensions one by one to see which one is not compatible with v1.7.

Mage/Adminhtml/Block/Customer/System/Config/Validatevat.php

Is this path a fix for it then?

Invalid config field backend model: adminhtml/system_config_backend

app/code/core/Mage/Adminhtml/Block/System/Config/Form.php(326): Mage::throwException(’Invalid config ...’)

Hello,

We advise you to replace the files of your updated Magento with the files from the original archive with the installing files of Magento (but the same version as you have), then clear the cache and remove the session files and then go to the site.

I’ve come across this a few times following either fresh installs or upgrades… Read the fatal error, it will describe a path from /app/code/core/ the _ characters are essentially /

So to use the original example…

Mage_Adminhtml_Block_Customer_System_Config_Validatevat

is

Mage/Adminhtml/Block/Customer/System/Config/Validatevat.php

Navigate to this file and you will find this php file — and likely all in that directory (so /Config/ in this case) is empty. Manually repopulate these from a local code base and voila, problem solved.
