I am using Magento to create a clothing store.  My store has many different designers that make the clothing that I sell.

Currently I have the designers setup as categories and when I create a new product for that designer, I add it to the designer’s category.  Each designer category has “No” set for “Is Anchor” and for design, I am using the two columns with left bar layout.

Everything works as expected when I browse the ‘designer’ category, but as soon as I select a specific designer from the list, all of the designer names are not present on that designer’s category.

I would like to be able to click on a designers name and see all products for that designer, but also be able to view the designer list (layered navigation) on the left so I can easily change which designer I am looking at.

What can I do to set this up correctly?

Here are some links to other Magento sites that have this working:
http://www.jbandme.com/brands/39-sixtyone
http://www.kirnazabete.com/designers/alessandra-gallo

Both of the URLs listed above have all of the designers listed on the left while browsing that designer’s products.

Do you have the link for the topic that talks about the vertical categories?  That would be a big help.  Thanks.

Hi Mister.. I’m quite new to this so I hope this is good advice. I’m doing something similar and found there’s an extension that gives you vertical navigation. If you add this in it’ll list your categories/sub categories.. If you put each designer as a sub category off of the root, then you can maintain a list of ‘categories’ on the left no matter what you click. It just means that each designer becomes a category rather than the filter way I think you’re doing it. I haven’t tried the filter thing myself yet, but I seem to be making progress doing it this way. (I think it means i’ve skipped the layered navigation system completely, but I think I’m getting more control.. we shall see)

With the left navigation you’ll get your category links on the top as well.. if you don’t want that you have to follow the how to disable them, from the left navigation extension page. I’m using that with the navlinks top bar extension where I can specify the top links rather than have them driven by categories.

Hope that helps
