I’m having the same problem. I have the Magento files uploaded to a subdomain (that is working, checked it with using other files) and all I get is a 500 error when I try to run the installer. I ran the Magento-Check.php file and my server is fully capable of running the software. Anyone have any suggestions?

First of all, thanks for your active participation in trying to trouble shoot. Here is my error log:

[Sun Apr 15 21:14:14 2012] [error] [client 65.128.182.244] File does not exist: /public_html/500.shtml
[Sun Apr 15 21:14:14 2012] [error] [client 65.128.182.244] SoftException in Application.cpp:601: Directory “/public_html/m/magento” is writeable by group

isn’t it suppose to be writable by group? 777?

Actually, I just reinstalled it with softaculous through webhostingpad. It worked this way. Im still not sure why it didnt work the normal way. Thanks for your help, im sure i will be needing it for other things in the future.

Yesterday I have the same problem but today it solved. Thanks to magento-cleanup.php. Load it to you hosting and run it before. You can download this at www. learnmagento.org. It works. This installation is better than using softtacolous. Hope this help.
