Provided your server is properly configured, you should be able to upgrade without much hassle by using the Magento Connect Manager. Make sure to select the Mage_All_Latest meta package. Most of the problems people are experiencing are due to incorrect file permissions on shared hosting.

Hi guys,

is there a post available that will list the specific file permissions and/or a script that can be executed to fix this problem with umask on shared hosting?

what is the recommended umask for magento in any event?

Cheers,
