I cannot get Magento to work for me.

Chris Williams did try to help out on this thread without success in the end though (Thank You Chris):
http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/142/

Before I switch to Nexcess I am seeking help from fellow users on Dreamhost who got Magento going.

I have a domain name registered and hosted with Dreamhost.
I am on Mac OS X 10.4.10 and used Cyberduck to SFTP the contents of the unzipped Magento folder to http://www.mydomain.com

I have changed permissions on the designated folders in these instructions:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/magento-installation-guide

After reading all the posts on this forum, I have the corresponding questions to the Dreamhost support and these are the relevant answers:

“The only thing we don’t meet is the mhash extension in PHP.  We’ve got
Apache 1 & 2, PHP 5.2.2, and MySQL 5.0.  Unfortunately the only way to
get the mhash extension in PHP is to compile your own PHP.” <--- I had asked them whether they meet the Magento system requirements: http://www.magentocommerce.com/system-requirements

“AllowOverride is already set to All in the httpd.conf file for your domain”

“mod_rewrite and .htaccess files and all that are already enabled by
default on all accounts.  It doesn’t look like you’ve uploaded the
.htaccess file, though.” <---- Where is the .htacess file I am suppose to upload and which others on this forum have mentioned they edited?

I am not a developer and/ or technically proficient so please if you have the patience and the will to help out, do post a tutorial. A step by step tutorial. I cannot possibly be the only one in this case. We would all be grateful.
Please feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Thank you in advance.

Anyone?

Or is it that no one uses Dreamhost?

Did you upload the .htaccess yet? If not that is the first thing you need to do.. it came with the magento package… it should be uploaded to the root level of your website.
You may need to show hidden files to see it.

Cheers
Adam

Hi Adam,

Thank you for your note.

After I read it, I used this command line in Terminal (I am on Mac) to make files starting with “.” visible:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES and then restarted Finder.
(defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO <- is to turn it off)

Now I see the .htaccess file in the unzipped Magento Folder which I could not see before and therefore had not uploaded. I am currently waiting for the upload via SFTP to finish.

I see a .svn folder in the unzipped Magento Folder; should I upload that to my domain as well?
