I thought this had been asked before but now I can’t find any mention of it here…

Will there be the ability to create tax rules for Canadian businesses? Canada has crazy complicated tax rules where there are two main types of tax (GST and PST), taxes differ by province and by product type. One tax is calculated before shipping and one is calculated after. Bah.

If anyone has found a good solution to this problem, please post! Thanks!

It’s certainly not as simple as it used to be…

For further details on what taxes are supposed to be collected and when, check this useful link…

I, too, am wondering how this can be implemented…

I need this too. For products that are not taxable, we would need the ability to turn off one or the other tax or even both.

Also does anyone know if this is possible if I hire a PHP5 programmer, or our we Canadians at the mercy of the Magento roadmap?

The key to getting Magento to handle all tax ramifications is to rely on the tax rules section. You’re going to need to spend some time thinking about how to setup your rules to do this but it’s not impossible and doesn’t involve any hacking of Magento core code.

I have an article on my website that explains the proper way to setup the tax rates and rules for Canada. HST, PST, GST doesn’t matter, it all works!
