Hi everybody.

I am new to magento and I would like to know, what programming skills are required for magento.

I have some experience with php, but never worked with the Zend Framework.
So maybe someone could give me some hints how to get started programming with magento (and maybe the Zend Framework).

Thanks.

To understand Magento’s architecture, you should have knowledge about PHP, object-oriented programming, the model-view-controller pattern, and of course databases.

I’m in the same boat.

I find, just taking on a real project and solving the specific issues at hand makes you learn a lot. There are also several blogs that have a few articles on certain aspects of Magento where you can learn about how to do things:

http://activecodeline.com/
http://www.exploremagento.com/

Also looking at some simpler Magento code blocks can give you a lot of insight. After all it depends what you want to do… Front-end customisation, Back-end modules, using the SOAP API for external integrations…

Good luck.
