zend framework uses whats known as a bootstrapper file, this means that when you call /install/ it tells index.php to run the install module, there is no file, it rewrites the url to look pretty basically smile helpful

in php.ini you should find a setting:

LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

check to make sure its not commented out (;)

I was getting the 404 error on first installation too.  Adding an .htaccess file to the Magento’s web directory got me going with the installer.  Here’s my .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase
/
RewriteRule !\.(js|ico|txt|gif|jpg|png|css)$ index.php

This is the same .htaccess file I’ve had to use on all my other Zend Framework applications.
