Make sure your browser supports Flash. We had the same issue when trying to edit downloadable products; after installing Flash, it worked.

What’s the exact problem? Magento fails to properly check / decode the “files” json value when Flash is not installed but a “link” has been already added to a downloadable product.

File /app/code/core/Mage/Downloadable/Model/Product/Type.php

$files Mage::helper('core')->jsonDecode($linkItem['file']);

Having this issue on 1.6.2.0. Flash is up to date and I’ve tried it on 4 different browsers.

Any help would be appreciated.

We just ran into this issue as well.  We found that a developer had put a javascript “fix” in that set the maxlength on all input fields in admin to 30 characters.  Somehow this affected the product editor’s ability to save images.  Once we removed the script that modified the maxlength, we could save products again.

I’d suggest that if this problem is occurring on your system, then there might something limiting the length of the input fields, or there may be something odd in the filesystem path to your image directories.

Hope this helps and good luck.

To whom it may concern,

I had the same issue:

Decoding failed: Syntax error

would be displayed upon trying to save a newly imported simple product, using Magento Version 1.7.0.2.
With only the trusted

FireGento_GermanSetup 1.1.4 (stable)

and

Locale_Mage_community_de_DE

additionally installed.
After much trial and error, I tracked it down to being an issue with special character in HTML.
The client wanted an image to receive the following Label:

The “Classic”

In the import script, the

_media_lable
(notice the correct WRONG spelling) entry was classified as:

The & q u o t ; Classic & q u o t ;

(NOTE: I know that the special character does not have spaces in it, but it will show up in this post if it is spelled correctly)

That alone threw the system of track; this is interesting, as special characters appear to work for the

description
and
short_description
entries.
Once I simply removed the quotations for the image label, everything worked as expected.

Over and Out.
