yeah, a few aspects of 1.1.8 are a mess, this being one of the key ones.
then add table rate csv messing up google checkout, passing free shipping on..
there’s some big bugs that are letting the show down.
...and a ::lot:: of small ones too lol!
as maddening and demoralizing as all of them combined are, i am still sticking with magento.
as long as development (and ::bug fixing::!!!!) keeps up you can’t really complain!
I’m having exactly the same problem and have no idea where to start looking. The site I’m working on seems to be fine in FF3 and IE6, so I assumed the problem to be with IE7 (which is my usual browser). Anyone had any luck finding any fixes?
Well, I thought I’d fixed the issue, but apparently not. We’re still getting complaints from customers trying to buy but are just getting sent either back to index.php or to an empty basket page.
I have now tested the site on two other machines and it seems to run fine on those. One had exactly the same OS and Web browser and the other a different OS. I can only assume that the problem is actually to do with the configuration of the machine or a conflict with an update of some sort.
Wow....this is a big problem for my web store as well. Probably 1 in 50 customers experiences the issue of being redirected to the home page when they click “add to cart.” It seems to be happening in all sorts of browsers and all different operating systems. Lots of customers are still successfully ordering though, so it’s not sinking our boat. I’m hoping for a solution soon. Keep up the good work Magento.
I also have the same problem on http://www.bargaincollection.com.
I have upgrded to 1.2.0.1 and the problem still exists. Sessions are being lost and customers are being redirected to home page frequently. Has anybody found an answer to how to fix this?
I have found the cause of this on my machine running IE7. It seems to be caused by the machine checking for RSS updates from my site. Everytime outlook updates RSS feeds it seems that the server issues a new session which overides the original one. After I unsubscribed to the feeds the sessions seem to last the required time.
Please let me know if this fixes for anyone else.
I’m just another person with this issue. Weird part is it just started out of nowhere?? As soon as I try to log into somewhere it starts redirecting me to the index.php from admin or the frontend. I am running 1.1.8. This is a huge problem as people can’t really shop if they can’t access the store. I serve with Media Temple and I had them look around and they weren’t able to help. I looked at the problem in Safari and I don’t even get redirected back to the homepage I get an error saying “Too many redirects occurred trying to open ‘https://www.domain.com/customer/account/login/’. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.” Hope this helps find a solution as we need one pretty bad.
I am also getting this problem, I have recently had customers calling to say they can add to the cart but have lost their cart when they try to checkout. This is probably happening 1 out of 20 customers at the moment so quite a big problem.
Do you know if the customers who are having this problem have subscribed to RSS feeds from your site?
If you see my previous post I’m trying to prove that this is infact the problem.

I’m not sure about that, I know that both are using Internet Explorer, one is using IE7, the other I don’t know which version. I haven’t been able to replicate the issue myself so it is difficult to assist them. Perhaps I should turn RSS off for the moment until there is some soid evidence as to what is causing the problems?
It certainly seems to have something to do with session validation but wether the settings are to blame or not I don’t know. The RSS issue only seems to affect Internet Explorer on my test machines, FF3 doesn’t seem to be affected by the same problem.
I have posted a bug report but as of today it has still not been looked at.
Hopefully someone will take this problem seriously soon.
