Serious Question regarding Magento URLs

Okay, Magento products get three URLs all the time.

One www.domain.com/product-name.html
and

www.domain.com/category-name/product-name.html

and

www.domain.com/category-name/sub-category-name/product-name.html

This is killing the customer’s SEO link juice all the time.

Can we make them all generate one single URLs ?

No need if you use the canonical tag. I’d be far more interested in a solution for category pages and the filter navigation - that’s the real pain in the a**..

Whats the issue with category and filter nav ?

And yes, we use the canonical Tag extension .

I thought, there might be some Magento core solution , since this is serious.

Well what canonical does is it will include a tag on each page that defines the url that should be used be searchangines for this page. So if your product includes the canonical tag, it doesn’t matter how many more urls there are that lead to the same product, since your telling seachringines only to use the one in the canonical tag.

With categories however, this doesn’t make a lot of sense, because the canonical tag will be the same for every page of a category. So you will be telling searchengines that page 1 of this category is the same as page 2, 3, 4, 5, etc - which of course isn’t true. Same goes for filternavigation, the canonical tag won’t change, but the content will. I am still not sure how big of a problem this is though…
