If your server is running PHP as a module, you will need to chmod all your directories to 777. If you have SSH access, execute this command from your Magento root directory:

find . -type d -exec chmod 777 {} \;
rm -rf downloader/pearlib/cache/* downloader/pearlib/download/*//tempend ?>

Now try to the upgrade again.

To reset permissions, run this:

find . -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;
chmod 777 var/ var/cache var/session
chmod 777 app
/etc/use_cache.ser
chmod
-R 777 media

PS: if you have SSH access, you can also upgrade Magento by executing this command:

./pear upgrade-all

If it gives you an “nothing to upgrade error”, try this instead:

./pear install -f magento-core/Mage_All_Latest

Hi. I’ve tried following your instructions and everything seemed to go without fail until I tried the

.pear upgrade_all
and
./pear install -f magento-core/Mage_All_Latest
commands. At that point the message I get is:
-bash: ./pearPermission Denied

I’m not sure if permissions are still not being set on a directory, and I can’t find that particular error on these forums so I have no choice but to ask.
