How to know which template a given page is using?

I’m trying to familiarize myself with the Magento templating system, and I think I have a good handle on blocks and template and layouts, but one thing I’m missing is where it all comes together. For example, my home page (the default) is using “frontend\myinterface\default\template\page/2columns-right.phtml” as the template, but I’m not sure where it’s being told that it should use 2columns-right.phtml instead of one of the other templates. How does a specific URL (in my case, the main Magento index at /store) know which layout to load?
