Hi After upgrading to M 1.6.0.0 I get the following message on Front-end AND Back-end:

Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

in the release notes there’s a reference to this issue:

“If you see the Service Temporarily Unavailable page after refreshing the frontend, open the Magento installation directory on the server and remove the maintenance.flag file. Then go to Magento var directory and remove the cache directory
- this issue only exists immediately after upgrading correct ”

hope it helps

I had this problem and deleted /www/maintenance.flag and all was well.

My current problem is the mysql error that occurs right after.

Are you sure that there is no maintenance.flag file? Could you please double check it?

Also, try to check index.php file permissions, it should be 644.
