Hosting: 1&1 Shared.  Linux.  PHP 5.24.  MySQL 5.0

I can’t seem to get the new version to install.  It seems to be because Magento keeps putting ‘index.php’ into the URL by default.  How do I remove this?  I didn’t happen in previous versions.

Here is my current .htaccess file (Magento installed in root folder)

## tell 1&1;servers to use PHP5
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x
-mapp-php5 .php

## default index file
DirectoryIndex index.php

<IfModule mod_php5.c>

## disable magic quotes for php request vars

php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off

## enable php short tags for templates

php_flag short_open_tag on

</IfModule>

<
IfModule mod_ssl.c>

## make HTTPS env vars available for CGI mode

SSLOptions StdEnvVars

</IfModule>

<
IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

## enable rewrites

Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on

## you can put here your magento root folder path relative to web root

RewriteBase /

## always send 404 on missing files in these folders

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(media|skin|js)/

## never rewrite for existing files, directories and links

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l

## rewrite everything else to index.php

RewriteRule .* index.php

</IfModule>

Order allow,deny
Allow from all

pretty sure they chose the /index.php/ route to avoid any initial url rewrite issues.

I’m also hosted on 1 & 1 shared with version 6.14100 running fine.  Was planning to update to 0.7.14800 today.  This thread leads me to believe that would be wasted effort.  Can anyone confirm??

The fix in the following url works for me with 1&1 Shared hosting w/ 0.7.14800 update.  I haven’t done any thurough testing yet, but it does install, the front end & back end both work.
