Hi Megento-heads,

I’ve just discovered something - Magento’s product import from a CSV file works better with files made from OpenOffice rather than MS Excel!

I’m working on a mac with an older version of office.  I’ve gotten a few small imports to work, but never had any luck with larger files (more than 10 records). I kept getting errors telling me that something was amiss and then the import process would referance a SKU with a value from another field.  I had a feeling that the CSV file was not being read correctly, so on an off chance I used open office to open the CSV created by Excel then saved the EXACT SAME FILE. The products then imported with no problem.

Moral of the story - Don’t trust vendors with an interest in a proprietary file format.

Hope it works for you and happy Magentoing

GregC

I don’t know if this is the case with Excel vs Open Office, but I noticed similar results between Mac vs Unix encoding.
