Magento image placeholder showing instead of my product images

I’ve got a weird problem.  I created products and uploaded images for them.  All the images were uploaded okay (they’re in the appropriate /media/catalog/product/ folder).  They also display okay in the admin panel.  However, only some of the images get displayed in the frontend store.  I checked /media/catalog/product/cache/ (after having reset the image cache and then viewing some products in the frontend) and only the images that are displaying correctly exist there.  I checked the permissions of the original images (/media/catalog/product/).  Both the working images and the nonworking images have exactly the same permissions and owner (owned by my webserver with permissions 775; directories are set to 777).  I have no idea what’s wrong.  Can somebody offer some suggestions?

Well, this sounds like you may have the same problem I just fixed in my installation.  As it turns out, the GD library extension for PHP also requires JPEG and PNG support.  I installed libjpeg and libpng and rebuilt PHP according to the PHP docs.  The key is to add --with-jpeg-dir and --with-png-dir to PHP’s ./configure command.  Once I did this, everything worked fine.

As a suggestion, I think the Magento install should check for JPEG and PNG support and throw an error if they’re not installed.

Hi Guys,

my host has also JPG and PNG support and I have also no images in the frontend. It seems that this is a bug in Magento!

Can anyone from the Magento team post a statement?

Thanks

I’m having exactly the same problem (I think).
The placeholder path is used instead of the image path.

I have 7 products. The first time I load the page after opening the browser, 6 images shows up.
Then after reload, only 4 images are howing (see frontend_images.jpg).

Looking at the source, the image path for the images that are shoing is:

<a title="Body" href="http://www.mywebsite.com/magento/index.php/tops/body.html">
<
img title="Body" alt="Body" src="http://www.ninaskarra.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/170x170/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/2/5/25-1_test.jpg"/>
</
a>

The URL for the image not showing is:

<a title="Blouse" href="http://www.mywebsite.com/magento/index.php/tops/blouse.html">
<
img title="Blouse" alt="Blouse" src="http://www.ninaskarra.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/170x170/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/images/catalog/product/placeholder/small_image.jpg"/>
</
a>

Then I click on a product WITH an image to view the product details (see product_image.jpg).
Now the image is not sowing again. Not the large one and not the thumbnail. But if I click the thumbnail, the popup window does show the image.
The html code for the large image is:

<img id="image" title="Body" alt="Body" src="http://www.mywebsite.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/images/catalog/product/placeholder/image.jpg"/>

The html code for the thumbnail image is:

<img title="" alt="" src="http://www.mywebsite.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/70x70/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/images/catalog/product/placeholder/thumbnail.jpg"/>

So what do I do when I upload images?
Well, I upload only one image, then I check the Base, Small and Thumbnail. And that’s it.
The images shos backend, but not in frontend.

And yeah… if I reload my page enough times, all iamges are gone :(

Is this a bug?

Ha ha
I tried a solution of deleting all cached files in http://www.mywebsite.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/.
The result was that now only 1 image was showing.

The funny thing though, is that if I click on the product, then on the thumbnail to view the large image, the image is cashed and I can se it in my product list again.

Annoying…

Btw.

I have this in my php.ini file:

magic_quotes_gpc = off
flag session.auto_start = off
zlib.output_compression = on
suhosin.session.cryptua = off
zend.ze1_compatibility_mode = off
extension=mcrypt.so
extension=pdo.so
extension=pdo_mysql.so
short_open_tag = on
memory_limit = 32M

This fixed a problem not bein able to upload images.

Luckily I had a backup.

We have also moved servers recently and this problem came up.

New product images won’t show up on the frontend.
Refreshing the image cache will eventually lead to ALL images not showing.

Luckily we had a backup of everything and placed the cache folders with the long folder names back in and was also able to get the new product image to show by manually creating folders and copying the images into those folders under that image cache folder.
Lucky because the store is a live store.

Our server has GD support and everything.

The problem lies with accessing and creating anything under the cache folders.
I can see that folder permission has been enabled for both image and var/cache folders but nothing has been created under them.

Futhermore, caching has been enabled in admin.

Can anyone tell me what components will stop magento from creating anything under those cache folders?

Is there already a solution?

I have the same problem here after i installed a magento backup, and copied all the images back to the media/product folder. Only some of the images are showing up. If i look at the image path of the images not showing then they are in the product directory but not in the cache directory. Strange…

Hope someone has an idea.

I have the same problem,
I moved magento to a different directory and now my images do not show in the frontend.
I had kept a copy in the old directory and I copied the images from the folder , media/catalog/product/cache/2, from the old directory to the new directory.
I found out when I open a page in the frontend, magento puts the image in the old cache directory and not in the new one.
It is obvious a problem with moving directories.
It is only a temporary solution, but the system is running.
good luck

after moving from “magento” directory to root directory I forgot to change the .htaccess file and the index.php

I changed in .htaccess (removed “magento”
############################################
## you can put here your magento root folder
## path relative to web root

#RewriteBase /magento/

And in index.php I also removed “ magento” $mageFilename = ‘Magento/app/Mage.php’;

Now it seems to work
good luck

Same problem here. If I don’t find a solution for that, Magento is useless for me.
