Hey all, I’m sure this question is posted a lot but I have different questions.

I am an avid with photoshop cs5, I understand html and a little css, but I could figure out how to turn a psd file into an html template easy.
Once that is done, how hard is it to make a magento template ? What other files have to be created, php, js etc etc?? I’m assuming, just not sure which. How easy can this be done by someone who knows photoshop cs5 html and some css?

Also if you know anyone who will convert a psd into a full working magento template please let me know!
Thanks,
Jon

First you need to get rid of the “PSD to HTML template” mindset, and if you, are like some of the designers that I have dealt with in the past, use PSD to export HTML codes and CSS, then IMHO you will have a uphill time to cope with Magento.

Converting a design onto Magento doesn’t work like that.

Get the layout structure up first, by layout structure I meant work on the page templates, header, footer (check the templage/page/ and template/page/html), after that work on every bit of the elements within header, content area, left/right and footer.

Template path hints (google it) will help you locate which template files get pulled into which structural blocks.

Magento is a fairly steep learning curve. Here is my advice. Take your psd and work out what elements you want. I.e. mega menus, sliders etc. Search the Magento connect to see if 1. There is a theme that suit you purpose with very little editing 2 extensions that you can use. Some themes can be more costly as with extensions, other are free! If you find something that has all the elements you are after do not proceed with buying yet. Start to work with magento in a local environment, use firebug or some other software I recommend coda if you work on a Mac. The biggest problem I found with magento is the size of it and the file directory structure. Once you get your head around that the very is pretty easy if all you are wanting to do is move elements and change the look. The forums here are a wealth of knowledge however I found that users rarely reply to posts that have already been answered several time. I.e. how do I change my logo? I also recommend reading as much as you can before you make a start. There is some interesting stuff on youtube and also Armando Roggio over at http://developer.practicalecommerce.com/ has done a couple of great building a theme from start to finish. Last word of advice Check and Double Check that the plugins tuts and theme are for your version. Oh and backup sometime small changes on the frontpage template can break things on the product pages.

Sounds a bit over my head. I guess i’ll be best leaving that to the people who do it for a living.

Thanks for the reply!
