Magento 1.5 search returns all products (not expected results)

After upgrading to 1.5 the quick search returns all products. The advanced search works just fine. I’ve cleared the cache and re-indexed everything but still nothing.

The search also doesn’t apply the minimum query length set in the admin.
And Switching between LIKE or FULLTEXT search seems to do nothing.

Any ideas why?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve got the exact same problem. After upgrading from version 1.4.n every search job returns the entire catalog.

Hey ALM72, after testing the advanced search I thought up the following workaround:

Modify your form.minim.phml.
Part 1 Modify the Form
- Set the form method to GET
- Set the form action to /catalogsearch/advanced/result

Part 2 Modify the text input
- Modifiy the input element with the id=’search’ and replace the <?php echo $this->helper('catalogsearch')->getQueryParamName() ?> part with: ‘name’.

It should look like this now:

<input id="search" type="text" name="name" value="<?php echo $this->helper('catalogsearch')->getEscapedQueryText() ?>" class="input-text" />

That’s basically it, instead of showing the entire catalog, you are now presented with the advanced search results. I know this is not a very good fix for our problem but might prove to be a good workaround until the underlying problem is fixed.

Cheers!

If you have issues with search after upgrade from v.1.4 to v.1.5, check this thread:

@ Michiel

Nice work around for the continuing saga of the buggy 1.5.1.

After upgrading to 1.5, I was getting random results for any kind of phrase search in the mini search on my test site.
And then the search results disappeared all together on the live site after I found another bug in the category section while creating a new subcategory.

So, I wound up also having to change the Results.php file as mentioned in this thread
http://www.optimiseblog.co.uk/magento-catalog-search-broken-not-working/

So for now, I’m back in business. Thanks again for the workaround tip.

@ Michiel

UPDATE
For my purpose, the only problem with choosing “name” as the searchable attribute in your workaround is if one has a store that also has common sku’s known and sold elsewhere on the internet. For example, if someone wants to find that common item number on your site, for obvious reasons of price shopping. Luckily I have an attribute, “short_description”, that has both name and item number included in the text.
So, I replaced your suggestion of “name” attribute with “short_description” attribute and it worked.
So for others with this problem, Michiel’s workaround also works with different attributes.
The thing that you have to also remember to do is reset that attribute to searchable “Yes” in both quick search and advanced search on the frontend, if it isn’t already, and then reindex (system>index management) The extra attribute shows up on the advanced search page as another option to choose, but its better than no search results at all.
;-)

Check out these extensions Search AutoComplete & Suggest Pro.  They most greatly improve the quality and relevance of search results: http://mirasvit.com/magento-extensions/search-autocomplete-suggestions.html
