Are there any HTML5 themes for Magento? Does Magento’s approach to themes restrict the creation of great new HTML5 themes in any way?

Nothing in Magento stops people creating HTML 5 themes, although they don’t seem to be common as of yet.

Inchoo recently posted about a Magento HTML 5 boilerplate http://inchoo.net/ecommerce/magento/magento-boilerplate/

A quick google search for magento html 5 themes doesn’t turn up much, but here’s one: http://www.superhug.com/categories/magento/designs/magento-carbon-html5

Well, if changing the dtd to HTML5 doctype counts, than some of our themes are of HTML5 , so is the one you posted smile

Such misguiding label though can fool awful lot of people who fancy HTML5 but know absolutely nothing exactly just what HTML5 is about. It’s a bit similar to “W3C validated” label that you can find in Magento Connect Marketplace - we constantly receiving enquiry if our themes are of “W3C validated” like others, or clients wanted the their sites be “W3C validated”. We said we couldn’t do it. Asked why? We said because W3C is an entity that can’t be validated by any so-called web designer/developer, any HTML validator and any company.

Seriously, to make a HTML5 Magento theme using all currently supported HTML5 elements, and taking advantage of the power HTML5 bring, and replacing some of theMagento features (such as getting rid of JS validation but use HTML5 native) and codes that come with the Default theme, is a very looong haul, and unless you are building your HTML5 theme from scratch, you will be facing horrible upgrade issue with every Magento update.

Changing doctype to HTML5, and change <div id="header"> to <head>, <div id="footer"> to <footer> in a Magento theme, strictly speaking, is not HTML5, and your users don’t get any benefit from HTML5, your site don’t get benefit from it either and you are creating an extra problem having to deal with IE/7/6 not able to interpret ‘header’ and ‘footer’ tags. Sure, serve older IEs HTML5 shiv or use the modernized script. Question is, what good does it bring to your users, your website? Will it bring extra revenue because the dtd is HTML5 and you have a header and footer HTML5 two elements?

We do have a pretty popular HTML5 free WordPress theme using some 10 currently supported HTML5 elements.

Sidenote to Magento team, the markup codes in the latest version of Default theme is worse than its first beta version 3 years ago!.

As the experts say if your XHTML -1.0 is well validated in W3C then you should stick with it, there is no need to move to XHTML-5.0 right away, but having said that HTML-5.0 is the future so once things settle down with it then yes we all should move towards it, right now there is too much of confusion surrounding it and therefore yes there are not many HTML5.0 templates available in the market!

I agree with raj, still a lot of development work is in process with HTML - 5, integrating Magento with it is one of those. I am sure a lot of people would have been waiting for such themes.

Use modernizr or HTML5 shiv.

Magento did announce to us last year that they’re working on a HTML5 theme for Magento, but I expect it will probably be for Magento 2. There’s nothing stopping designers changing the doctype and using HTML5 with their current custom themes though.

Backward compatibility is not a issue, you can deal with it by using HTML 5 shiv.

Create the new element using JavaScript, and IE or Firefox 2.0 will able to style it:

document.createElement(’header’);

But as I said, if your website is 100% validated as per W3C standards then there is no point for hitting HTML5.0.
