Hello,

I need to modify/replace the standard callouts (e.g. Back to School) with the callouts I need.
I found many articles and posts on how to remove it by using new theme and local.xml and <remove> tag.

But I need to change the content of the callout and behavior like a target url which the callout points to.

Please, could any kind soul help me, how can I do this? I also want to use upgrade compatible way to change the callouts.

Thank you.

It seems I found the solution:

At first, it’s necessary to override your default theme.
On how to do this, please, look here (’Common Elements You Can Turn Off Via the Layout Files’ section)
http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/turning-on-off-magentos-content-blocks/

Then, in your just created local.xml (see above link) you add something like this:

<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<layout>
   <default>
     <
remove name="left.permanent.callout" /> <!--the dog-->
     <
remove name="right.permanent.callout" /> <!--back to school-->

         <!--
define new block added to the right column -->
     <
reference name="right">
          <
block type="cms/block" name="wait_for_authors.callout">
              <
action method="setBlockId"><block_id>wait_for_authors</block_id></action>
          </
block>
     </
reference>

     <!-- <
remove name="catalog.compare.sidebar" /> --> <!--product compare-->
     <!-- <
remove name="paypal.partner.right.logo" /> -->  <!--paypal logo-->
     <!-- <
remove name="cart_sidebar" /> --> <!--cart sidebar-->
     <!-- <
remove name="left.reports.product.viewed" /> --> <!--recently viewed prod-->
     <!-- <
remove name="right.reports.product.viewed" /> --> <!--recently viewed prod-->
     <!-- <
remove name="right.reports.product.compared" /> --> <!--recently compared prod-->
   </default>
</
layout>

New block is added by the reference to CMS static block with id = wait_for_authors. (you use the id you need).

Well, when you complete with the local.xml you go to backend (admin panel) and go to CMS/Static Blocks. Add new block. Assign it the same identifier you just specified in your local.xml, then add content you need. The content is html text, so you are able to add whatever you want.

I’m not really sure about images. <img src="images/an_image.gif"> doesn’t work. I don’t know where it looks for the files. I tried to
create folder in /magento/skin/frontend/defalut/my_theme_name/images/an_image.gif. It doesn’t work. But there is a workaround.
Turn off the WYSIWYG editor and you will see the orange button ‘add image’. Use it to add images. It works for me.

Hello!

I’m kind of having the same problem.

I have a standard 2columns-right.phtml template and for a specific category I had to create a new template

<two_columns_right_custom module="page" translate="label">
                    <
label>2 columns with right bar custom</label>
                    <
template>page/2columns-right-custom.phtml</template>
                    <
layout_handle>page_two_columns_right_custom</layout_handle>
</
two_columns_right_custom>

In this second 2 columns template / layout I have to remove the poll and product compare…
How can I set this over local.xml?
The basic 2 columns template show have it all an the custom only the side cart?
Thx in advace!
