CSS editor not working

I’ve edited the custom CSS file of the apparel theme to include a different background, and remove whitespace below nav.
Here is what I put:

body {
    background
-color#C4C9B1;
    
background-imageurl("../css_editor_images/pattern_103.gif");
    
background-repeatrepeat;
    
color#515549;
    
font12px/18px Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}

.top-container { margin0padding0}

But… nothing in my frontend changes. If I load with Firefix, I see my custom background but then the theme background quickly overrides it.

Anyone else having trouble customizing?
