Same here. The webservicex currency converter service seems to be slow or unavailable lately. As it is a 3rd party service, Magento is not the direct problem here probably.

However, if I enter the URL in my webbrowser, I do get results eventually. But currency import via Magento still keeps failing.

(BTW, I don’t know who webservicex are, or why they are offering their service for free.)

I’ve been having this problem as well.

In
/app/code/core/Mage/Directory/Model/Currency/Import/Webservicex.php
I noticed there’s a timeout of 15 seconds.

->setConfig(array(’timeout’ => 15))

I’ve set this to 60 to see if it helps.

Yahoo also has a converter at the following address:

http://quote.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=CADUSD=X&f;=l1&e;=.csv

(CAD = Canadian / USD = US)

But I don’t know how we would go about using this.

I tried it as well, with a timeout of 120 (and with cache refresh afterwards). No difference, still ‘cant retrieve rates’ message.

Earlier today, by pasting the webservicex URL (displayed after magento currency update timeout) into the webbrowser the page tried to load for 5 minutes. After that, it hadn’t fetched any results and I gave up. The site seems to be more responsive at the moment however, but still no luck with magento.

Nope. Changing the timeout didn’t help for me either.

Does anybody have a fix for this… or know how to add the option to use another service?

Problem:
Webserviceex.net allows free lookup of currency conversion rates, however they get over 4 million requests a day and are often down. Magento has a bug that tells you your rates were updated when the service is down and nothing was really updated.

Solution:
Check the following URL prior to importing currency rates into Magento. If the two frames (labeled Demo and WSDL) timeout or give an error, then the service is down. Wait until that page is loading the demo data with no problems, then your import should have no problem.

I upgraded to 1.1.8 then to 1.2.02 and it now works.

WebserviceX.net is a pain in the ass, been slow every time I ran it.

I’ll see if I can change the source to Yahoo Finance through their mega quick CSV files.

Example USD to GBP:

http://quote.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=USDGBP=X&f;=l1&e;=.csv

For those fed up with Webservicex’s unreliable service, I’ve now got Yahoo! Finance working as a source:

I have the same problem, so that I’m in this thread.

However, I tried 4 times to import the rates, and at the 5th chance the importation worked.

I have a similar issue.
Updating rates sits there for ages, and eventually goes to a 500 Server error with the url: http://www.mysite.com/store/index.php/admin/system_currency/fetchRates/

If I then take the page to:
I get this message at the top of the admin…
*
o Cannot retrieve rate from http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx/ConversionRate?FromCurrency=USD&ToCurrency;=AUD
o Cannot retrieve rate from http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx/ConversionRate?FromCurrency=USD&ToCurrency;=CAD
o Cannot retrieve rate from http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx/ConversionRate?FromCurrency=USD&ToCurrency;=EUR
o Cannot retrieve rate from http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx/ConversionRate?FromCurrency=USD&ToCurrency;=NZD
o All possible rates were fetched, click on “Save” to apply

I tried that weservicex demo link as suggest above and it also sits there for ages. So I guess this issue is most likely with them and not with Magento.
I there any plan to support other currency rate providers?
What about xe.com? Virtuemart has an extension to pull in rates from there. Seems to work.
It seems to me webservicex is not a good system for something as great as Magento to rely on. I suggest providing other options or switching to something else completely.

I’ll try this Yahoo one posted above.

Jonathan
