This method works well for loading the three images which have specific attributes (image, small_image, thumbnail).

However, I have been trying to figure out how to add more images like you can through the admin area but using a bulk import.  I think I have a workaround which is working for me so far:

Essentially you can use gammafxs method repeatedly to add more images to each product by changing the value of the image field in your csv file, running the profile to import that image, repeat as necessary and then finally setting the value in the csv file back to what you want the real base image to be and running the import one last time.
The other images which you upload are no longer the base image for the product, but they do seem to stay associated with the product, so you can build up a gallery of multiple images in this way.

Thinking this through, Im not sure how you would remove an image from a product using a bulk import - anyone know?

I am using 1.5.1 for this; have not tried 1.6 yet but it would be wonderful if all this was fixed in that edition.

Upgraded to Magento ver. 1.5.1.0-beta1 - the issue still persists. However, there is a workaround now… You can create a new import profile just for images and bring them in separately.  To do so follow the steps below:

go to System > Import/Export > Dataflow - Profiles.
Click Add New Profile.
Setup a profile and select NO for “Original Magento attribute names in first row” (see attached screenshot)
Map the fields to the ones in your CSV
Save and Run the profile with your CSV

As long as the product is already imported the image CSV can just have a sku, image, thumbnail, small_image fields.

If the product does not exist, you’ll get an error on that line.

Hope this helps someone.

Magento Version:- 1.5.1

I did all the above things which you said. My images are in media/import but still when I click on RUN PROFILE i get an error saying the IMAGE DOES NOT EXIST however all the images are in the media/import

Hello! I would really appreciate if somebody could help me resolve this issue.
Initially I imported all products and images following way.

before uploading csv i uploaded all images to:  media/catalog/product/b/l

next I uploaded csv and image path was: /b/l/42079.gif

evertyhing uploaded fine, but when i try to do any kind of changes on these imported products (change the price, stock status) image will disappear.
What Im missing?
I also tried to upload images to media/import, but they would not appear.
Please advice. I really need this help.
thank you!

Be sure that once you’ve moved all your images to media/import, that you change your csv’s image paths, so for example instead of:

/o/l/olympus.jpg

you just have

/olympus.jpg

and make sure you have the slash before it.

Has anyone else tried this using v1.6.0.0 (stable)? This version has a known problem where you can\’t use the admin panel to upload images. You need to install an extension to make it function at all (http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/242982/P0/, page 2 has solution). I did that and admin image uploads work now.

Using the import feature of the admin works by placing the images under media/import/. After importing, the images show up on the website. However, no images are listed when you look at the actual product (configurables and simples) in the admin panel. Has anyone experience this? e.g. when I click on \"Images\" on the product information vertical menu on the right side, no images are listed there.

i need a working method now for 1.6.2.0.
Importing images doesn’t work. i have used:

location:
/media/catalog/product/c/o/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg
csv:
/media/catalog/product/c/o/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg

location:
/media/import/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg
csv:
/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg

Nothing work. with dataprofiles it is a hell because of the indexing after the import. when finished the admin gets stuck/freezes. And still no product images.

How to import product images in magento 1.6.2.0?

Importing products are very easy. Instead of installing plugins to do for you. and struck in somewhere. just create an CSV file with all the image names and your required filed and then import that file by reading each line and inserting into the db.

If you are a developer. Then please visit this thread

http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/277548/

It definitely solves your problem…

Happy Coding.....

Hi,

I have used the solution as provided, with using the data profiles.

I want to say I am running this magento on a shared hosting, which is bad in the first place. I suggest you run it on vps which goes much faster and will give you less of a headache. Everything turns out to be much smoother on vps.

The import of images was not working due to permissions set on media folders.

I suggest you 777 all media folders and subfolders.

Including media/tmp/…

The import on 1.5.1 copies the images to tmp folder. When I used the data profiles I received the error that it could not create directory. So I needed change permissions on all those folders and subfolders to 777

Then after it worked.

All i can say is gammafx you are a legend! Thank you so much for this information… after many hours trying all sorts of ‘fixes’ I stumbled on your post ...my images are now working!!

That’s wrong!!!
TRY LIKE BELOW:
location:
/media/import/c/o/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg
csv:
/c/o/combi_r_001_02_1.jpg

because :
in app\code\core\Mage\Catalog\Model\Convert\Adapter\Product.php line 731

$addedFilesCorrespondence $mediaGalleryBackendModel->addImagesWithDifferentMediaAttributes(

$product,

$arrayToMassAddMage::getBaseDir('media') . DS 'import',

false,

false

);

I hope this work for you!
