When I surf to the MAGENTO-Wizard my browser shows up the error-message “Object not found! ... Error 404”.
I type the address “http://localhost/magento/” and after a little while the address change to “http://localhost/magento/install/” and the error message appears.
.htaccess exist in the root folder. And mod_rewrite is loaded.
I’m not sure if you’ve solved your problem, but I managed to successfully install Magento 0.6.14100 by using XAMPP. Once installed you need to increase the amount of PHP RAM to something like 32MB located at /opt/lampp/etc/php.ini. To start XAMPP just call /opt/lampp/lampp start and to stop just call /opt/lampp/lampp stop. MySQL is located at /opt/lampp/bin/mysql with root having no password. I only use this for development only and not for production.
Hope this helps and I hope you have a merry christmas and new year
