I have installed Magento 1.1.6 and all seemed to be working fine until I tried to download a theme. The problem is when I click on ‘Magento Connect Manager’ I get a 404 error. This is the only link in my Admin that does this. The folder it is referencing is -
/magento/index.php/admin/extensions_local/
I have looked for hours for the answer and I have come up with nothing. If someone could please tell me what I need to do that would be great. Thanks
Anyone? I tried going to magento/downloader/ but I get the same 404 error. I Chmod all the folders in downloader to 755 and files to 644 but, this did not help at all. Please is there anyone with an answer to this?

Have you tried the full version instead? The downloader is known to produce some problems for users.
Sorry, I meant I was navigating to magento/index.php/downloader/ on my site and it was producing the same result. I downloaded the 1.1.6 zip file and that is what I am installing. I have tried reinstalling several times but, still get the same result.
/downloader/index.php is set to 644 and I am still getting a 404 when clicking on Magento Connect Manager. I installed 1.1.7 hoping that this problem had been fixed but, it is the same thing. If anyone has run into this and fixed it please tell me how. Thanks
This worked for me and I hope it helps someone else. This is on version 1.1.7 so not sure if this will work on any other versions.
Directory /downloader/ set to 755
file /downloader/index.php set to 644
I use Cpanel and I had password protected the directory /Magento/ so that I wouldn’t have anyone stumbling on the site while it was being developed. I removed the password protection and the ‘Magento Connect Manager’ worked.
I figured it was something really simple but, for some reason this never occurred to me.
No error message.
Everytime I click: System>Magento Connect>Manage Extensions = redirect to 404 page not found - Whoops, our bad…
Frontend links are Okay
Only that link caused me problem and I don’t know where and how to fix it.
Is it related with htaccess url rewrite, root path, or anything - I am stuck with no clue
