I wanted to select hundreds of products, and mass-assign a category.

But seems Magento does not have such a function?

I bought http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/BalancedCMS/extension/4271/balanced_masscategories/reviews#reviews
but was not given a license code or anything..... something wrong?

Magento supports such a thing.
Just create the category you want, and under the tab ‘Category products’ you can search through all the products in the store and assign them to your category.

Contrary to what you claim here, at the tab “category products” there is no option to search the whole store.  Zero products.

I am on version: Magento ver. 1.4.1.1

What version are you referring to ?

Sorry about that. I forgot to explain it all.
In the tab ‘category products’, the first column in the grid has by default selected ‘Yes’. Set that to ‘Any’ (see attached image) and hit search. You should see the list of all products in your store.
After that you can even select a few from the first page and go to the next page. Your selections will be kept. After you finish with all the pages hit Save.
