I get the install wizard to come up, and I’ve checked the ‘Agree’ box but “Continue” remains grayed out.

Firebug shows “$ is not defined” errors

$ is not defined
[Break on this error] changeSubmitStatus($(’agree’));

$ is not defined
[Break on this error] $(’submitButton’).disabled = !obj.checked;

So, I can’t go any further!!!

This is on XP Media Center 2005, with latest release of XAMPP (1.6.4) running apache as service, ssl enabled.

Got it to work.  I put the following in the bottom of httpd.conf file (because I extracted magento the directory noted):

<Directory “c:/xampp/htdocs/magento/">
AllowOverride All
</Directory>
