I was wondering if there was any way to restrict sections a registered user can view.

For example, on the demo site:  http://demo.magentocommerce.com/

Is there any way that as an Admin we could specify that a registered user might only see “electronics” and “apparel”, while a different registered user might see “apparel” and “furniture”. We don’t mind unregistered users being able to see everything, but we want to use this site to distribute our products to dealers, and want to be able to restrict what products each dealer can buy.

It doesn’t have to be product-by-product restrictions. But we do need category restrictions.

I’m not sure if you found a solution for this yet.  But I had a similar issue and found a solution.  On my site, I only allow wholesale customers to view certain categories.  I was able to accomplish this by adding this extension.

All you have to is specify which customer group can view the category or products.

Also, if you want to only allow access to users that you approve, there is another extension from the same author which allows you to activate a newly registered user before they can browse your storefront.

Please note, you need to set your magento connect manager to “beta” in order for the install to go through.

So far, I am very happy with these extensions.

Hi!
You can easily do it with Customer Group Catalog extension.Manage visibility of specific categories and products by customer groups. Configure product price visibility on product and category pages.

-Hide price block and ‘add to cart’ button
-Use a cms-block instead of price
-Redirect to a CMS page or show 404 error for products
-Remove product and category links.
