Currently, all promotional pricing goes based off of Special Price, so you can run into issues where you could be giving away products on your website.
For example, you are selling a product for $50 and give a coupon that discounts the item by $25. Let’s say down the road you decide that you want the price to be on sale for $25 for everyone. The coupon would then give customers the product for $0.
For a tiny store with few coupon codes, this may not be a problem, but it will be for anyone with pages of coupons.
I second this request. We have sent out coupons to customers that are unqiue to them. Some offer up to 20% off. Currently if we run discounts for everyone using the catalog price rules then the customers with coupons are getting their discount on top of the catalog discount which is more than we intended when the coupon was first created.
Surely we need an option to only apply the coupon discount to the original price.
Thanks, Ponnu Kumar
That is brilliant, and I am sure it helped many.
After we do that, how do we apply it in the rule?
I thought it would be in the drop down of the Actions tab when crating a rule.
Sorry, but I hope you can help with this as well…

I’m not sure this is still relevant, since the post was made a while ago, but I found it just now and wanted to advise. To set the custom price according to your specific requirements, you can use this: http://www.mag-manager.com. This is kind of a helper in the management of your whole store, not only the pricing. And you might not need everything that’s there, but you should definitely get what you need out of it.

That can be easily prevented using Special Promotions extension, which allows to exclude items on sale from being discounted with coupons.
if ($baseItemOriginalPrice < $basePrice) return $this;
This will prevent discounts for products that are already on sale, products that have tier based pricing and compensate for changes in currency.
So, those of you looking for the fix to prevent sale / special prices and tier prices from being discounted, this easy fix above will help you. Really this should be default functionality of Magento and just a drop down of the rule to say, include Special Price and Tier Priced Products… Yes, No.
