What are you installing it on? vista, xp?

What server software are you using? wamp?

I’m using XAMPP 1.6.6, on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3.

I’m using wamp on xp and it works fine. I don’t know what settings are different on xampp. have you checked the permissions on the c:/window/temp folder? Look for c:/windows/temp in your xampp ini files and change it to a different folder.

Found this page on installing with xampp and wamp: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/general/installing_on_windows_with_xampp_and_wamp

Make sure you have followed those instructions. And like I said, it works fine in wamp, so if you aren’t committed to xampp, you could give it a try.

Yeah, I checked the permissions, but all was fine.
I managed to get things working by using the downloader version.

The new problem is working out how to speed things up; it’s runs incredibly slow on my PC.
I dread to think how slow it might be on my shared hosting :(
