I have spent a day trying to install magento locally, the problems I have been having is that the tutorials are out of date. So this is my working tutorial from September 2010.

This is really brief so I am happy to help and edit the tutorial if I have to.

------------------------

Download XAMPP - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html ( I used 1.7.3 )

Go to xampp/php/php.ini or search for php.ini

crtl F the following

max_execution_time
change to 1800

max_input_time
change to 1800 or -1 for unlimited

memory_limit
change to 512mb

;extension=php_curl.dll
change to extension=php_curl.dll (remove semicolon)

save and reopen to check changes and make sure you haven’t saved as a txt file

Goto XAMPP control panel

Run Apache
Run MySql

Download Magento & Sample data (if needed)

Go into MySql http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
Create database magento
Import Sample data

Copy the downloaded magento folder to xampp\htdocs

Goto http://127.0.0.1/magento/

Run wizard

If you need to restart wizard delete - \xampp\htdocs\magento\app\etc\local.xml

------------------------

I hope this helps and save a lot of you time.

I will reply to anyones problems.

Your tutorial works indeed.

Many thanks!

I was going crazy not knowing what I was doing wrong.

Still have some problems with the installation.
Thanks to you I can see the instalation wizzard now.
I can click to accept the agreement. But the problems start with the localization
The wizzard will not accept my choice of language, time zone and currency.
If I accept the default Configuration will give the next error: PHP extension “curl” must be loaded

I made the changes as you suggested in your tutorial.
But probably I am missing something.

Please help, have been trying to install now for some weeks, without any succes.
Until now your tutorial is the anything that helped me in the right direction.

Using Xampp 1.7.1 on Windows 7 premium.

Thank you.

I am using version 1.7.3 so you might need to download that one.

Have you checked your php.ini file that the changes have definitely been made.

Check that ;extension=php_curl.dll does not have the semicolen ; becuase that should sort out the curl problem.

I also had the same problem with the language not changing. But you should not worry about that becuase you can change that after in configuration.

Make sure you are viewing the local magento on http://127.0.0.1/magento/ not http://local/magento/ , don’t know why but that didnt work for me.
