So from what I understand, there are three image sizes that magento uses. However, what would the perfect sizes for these be?

Thumbnail
Small
Large

Thanks!

Well, I think I was able to determine these except for the Large size.

Thumbnail: 135x135
Small: 68x68
Large: ?

Hi Insidedesign,

The large image is called Main image in Magento. The box that contains the main image in the default Magento template is 265 x265. That said, you can upload any image size you want. Larger images will be proportionally reduced to fit in that box at the zoom out state.

Hope this helps,

Just make sure your images have a 1:1 aspect ratio, or the zoom won’t work properly.

Is this 1:1 ratio a compulsory thing rolleyes ,
to avoid distortions in the images?

It seems too stiff, to me, shut eye
to have squarish image dimensions,
while almost ALL images in the real world
are actually rectangular.

Is it not possible to leave the choice of the images’ size
to the admin in the back end?

Hope I am not speaking any heresy, here red face

It’s actually the other way around:
Thumbnail: 68x68 (or actually 75x75 i think)
Small: 135x135
