How to define translation files on override modules?

I noticed that if you override classes, some translations stop working.

It’s unclear to me how to define translation files so that both old translations and some custom
translations would work after i have override a class.

For example, after overriding some classes in “Catalog” module, i defined two translations files in the config.xml file.

<frontend>
<translate>
<modules>
<Lab_Catalog>
<files>
<default>Mage_Catalog.csv</default>
<lab>Lab_Catalog.csv</lab>
</files>
</Lab_Catalog>
</modules>
</translate>
</frontend>

This code doesn’t seem to work.

Am i on the right track?

Does tag names before the csv file declarations have a special meaning?
For example, “default” on row <default>Mage_Catalog.csv</default>
