I have a client who wants to upload one image per product, and not the three that seem to be required by the admin. Is there any way to facilitate this, or should I work something else out?

Thanks.

hi emagine,

Generally, only one image is required - the small image. Although, for best results, we recommend uploading three instances of the same image (the only difference between them being size), your client could take the main image size (width=265) and upload it for the other image options to save time. Use a square format 265 x 265 for best results.

Are there any plans to incorporate server-side image resizing so that all 3 sizes can be created after the large image is uploaded?

@Danny Young - the short answer is yes, we want to add such functionality. I cannot guarantee it makes it to the first stable release. But it will be one of the first things we will add.

Thanks

Generally, only one image is required…
Use a square format 265 x 265 for best results.

Forgive me, first of all, if I am stating something too obvious
or already-dealt-with previously, of which I am not aware…

I guess the squarish format for the images (1x1)
is a good base for the zooming capacity of the image system
currently in use in the product page.

However, IMHO,
that the standard for all products’ images should be 1x1…
could be subject to discussion & revision.

Tha main point is that the standard, universal format for images
is rectangular and NOT squarish (few exceptions a part).

All images available to us shop owners,
coming either from their own cameras or
from the stocks available in the net,
are actually (in various ratios)
almost always rectangualr and almost never square.

Just as an ex. let me tell you about my own website
where I am going to sell books:
ALL my images are… book size, i.e. rectangular
and NONE of them are square.

The fact against the odd squarish format advised by Magento
is that this 1x1 ratio forces all of us
to re-size into a squarish size
all our already-available or readily-available images,
either by cutting out some part or
by having to add some other ‘blank’ part,
in order to keep the image useful & meaningful :
NOT an encouraging perspective
(especially if you have thousands of them)!

Perhaps, a double-standard (square AND rectangular)
should be presented in the back-end and
leave the shop-owners to adopt
whichever they need for their own specific use?

Of course, a more expert and/or technical point-of-view
is welcome by people like Rubin, Moshe, Minu, etc.

magento are not saying 1x1 is THE standard. its just currently what they have working. images are obviously going to be handled better later on. you don’t need a homeric-length poem to convince anyone.

Well, uBlastOFF,
since me & you are NOT Magento…
(at the max. we can consider ourselves *Community partners*, so-to-say)
it could be nice if they themselves
could clear this foggy field of the images,
which was my request, in first place.

its just currently what they have working

Since they also reccomend it,
without stating it is just a temporary solution,
it is only logical to deduct that this is THE standard NOW.

images are obviously going to be handled better later on

Hopefully so, but where are you getting this info from?
Could you kindly share it with the rest of us?

you don’t need a homeric-length poem to convince anyone.

Kindly leave the basic/minimum liberty of expression to others
and you express yourself as you like.
Sarcasm hardly helps to answer any query.

And my query was explaining in detail
my understanding of the problem,
which could be considered a ‘worry’
by so many other users.

I was not trying to convince anyone,
but to understand… OK, uBlastOFF?

@WisdOMbooks: media handling is going to be redone.

One of Magento’s main goals is flexibility, so in no case 1x1 image size is an endorsed standard.
The default frontend theme including javascripts was made for demonstration purposes, and we are all for new themes and display methods to appear.

Oh… OK ! I feel relieved now,
to know that we are not squeezed-in
into some 1x1 strait-jacket !

Yes, we all have already experienced this, from the very beginning
(I expecially like the attributes and the data-flow systems).

… in no case 1x1 image size is an endorsed standard.

GOOD, thank you for clarifying my mental fog on the topic.

… we are all for new themes and display methods to appear.

I am just waiting for all that,
with much trepidation and anticipation.

Though I guess that, by now,
you must be already fed-up
with compliments, thankings & praises,
I still think we should thank
the Higher Powers up-there
to have sent all of you,
dear MAGentleMen & MAGentleLadies,
to rescue the whole e-commerce world
from the previous & current dark ages… cool smile
