Can Magento team or a kind soul makes a apply-to-all instruction how one go about installing the Magento to server via SSH in Mac OS X? The scenario is that the server that one is going to install, meets all the requirements Magento needs.

My webhost support said I don’t need root access as the server is PHP 5.2.2 and I brought up the server info, all the extensions/addons are there ready to greet Magento, problem is I can only manage to login to my server via SSH. I don’t know what command is needed to enter.  The Terminal Help has a “Drag and drop into Terminal for executable file, but I am too afraid to do that.

thanks!

Chinesedream. All you need is to untar the package on your server. So if you do have access to SSH, simply use Putty or another SSH client. For Mac there is RBrowser (http://www.rbrowser.com/). It has a visual GUI so you will not have many problems (I hope ) smile

With this client you’ll be able to transfer the files via FTP/SFTP and than untar the files directly on your server (http://www.rbrowser.com/FileOperations.html). After that there is nothing else to do as setting permissions and installing Magento smile

Dziekuje!!!A.Piotrowski Thank you so much!!! I will go download the browseer and try it out.

OK, I see that it wants USD35 so that I can use SFTP. Will the Transmit do the job?
http://www.panic.com/transmit/
I have the latest version and is very happy with it, therefor prefer not to make another purchase on FTP client.

thanks!

This is how ive managed to install via SSH:

navigate to the directory you want the magento folder to exist in (magento untar’s into a folder called /magento).

1. wget http://s3.assets.magentocommerce.com/product/Magento-B1Preview-0.6.tar.gz
2. tar -zxvf Magento-B1Preview-0.6.tar.gz
3. chmod o+w var var/.htaccess app/etc
4. chmod -R o+w media

If you are running php4 or php5.1.6 you will need to get the cgi binary and follow the following steps:

5. navigate to cgi-bin that sits within the magento folder
6. wget http://www.magentocommerce.com/support/php5cgi/php5-cgi
7. chmod 755 cgi-bin
8. chmod 755 cgi-bin/php5-cgi

then you should be set to install.

I hope this helps

André

Thanks Scott. I am running into abit of trouble though. I have successfully untar the Magento package from the Mac OSX Terminals. As soon as this step “tar -zxvf Magento-B1Preview-0.6.tar.gz “ finished, I enter “chmod o+w var var/.htaccess app/etc’, but it shows me this:

chmod: cannot access `var’: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `var/.htaccess’: No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `app/etc’: No such file or directory

What should I do now?

thanks!

forgot to say, I didn’t follow the following steps because my PHP is 5.2.2

Did you make sure you are inside the magento file. cd magento/ then chmod.

After untarring, you will still be just outside of the magento directory, that’s why. If you’re already disconnected, just cd /path/to/magento/ (if you start with a slash, that is the path from the root folder

hmmm, don’t know what I did wrong:

I believed I was in the magento folder...anyhow, tried it now and nothing is happening.

This task:  “tar -zxvf Magento-B1Preview-0.6.tar.gz “
action ends here:

magento/.htaccess
mydomain.com@cl02:~$

I believe “c102” is the subdomain of addon domain that I want Magento to be installed.

I entered:
“cd magento” pressed return
it becomes this: mydomain.com@cl02:~/magento$

entered this: chmod o+w var var/.htaccess app/etc

many minutes later, nothing happens, so I entered this: chmod -R o+w media

still nothing happens

Can I PM either of you?

thanks and sorry for being such a helpless case. I am good at design and CSS layout, not server stuff.

if I enter this:
http://mag.myaddondomain.com/

it shows:
Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

This: http://mag.myaddondomain.com/magento

Not found

I had the “Magento-B1Preview-0.6.tar.gz” uploaded to http://mag.myaddondomain.com

question, do I need to change directory too? I am just thinking mayb (mt) grid server behaves differently from other nix servers.

my login username is:

and according to (mt) guide, I should use something like so ‘ssh serveradmin&#xma;indomain.com@maindomain.com

however I want to install Magento onto :
mag.addondomain.com and I had the tar file uploaded to the root directory of this sub.addonmain.
