I work for a manufacturer who for new product launches will often launch a “microsite” for that product line using a http://www.productname.com style URL. We also have a Magento store where these product lines are displayed as part of the Magento catalog on http://www.companyname.com.
As products age, we take down the microsites and would like to redirect any traffic to those domains to the corresponding category in the main http://www.companyname.com website and catalog.
We’ve set up virtual hosts in the conf file to repoint the domain names, no prob. But I’d like to avoid creating htaccess files for all of these product-oriented domains if possible (because our merchants change their minds about where to point them and I don’t want to have to maintain this for them basically). Is it possible to use Magento’s URLrewrite Management tool to do this redirect?
The specific scenario is that if a user arrives at our site using the URL http://www.productname.com. Rather than leaving them on the home page, I would like to automatically redirect them to http://www.companyname.com/products/productnamecategory. I haven’t been able to successfully do this yet with the URL rewrite tool and wondered if any one has or if the tool is only designed to work with URLs derived from the base URL and maybe just won’t work with another domain name as the request path?
