exception.log - does it work?

I have enabled logging and my experience so far has been that errors almost never get logged to exception.log. To work around this problem I have started doing:

catch (Exception $e{
    Mage
::log($e);

[...]
}

imo exception.log should be catching this if enabled - or have I misunderstood the purpose of this logfile?
Cheers,
Simon

exception.log file is used for Mage::logException method
for Mage::log is used system.log

Thanks for the Mage::logException hint. I realize now, my question was misleading. What I meant was shouldn’t all relevant exceptions be logged to the exception.log when enabled? At least that was my initial impression, when I enabled the feature.
Thanks,
Simon

You can check var/report/ folder for exception debug traces.
