1) Back up your Database
2) Make sure you database is backed up.
3) Setup a test site with a new version of Magento, install 1.4 using your old database and let Magento upgrade your database
4) Add in your old theme and choose in your admin backend
5) Add your custom modules one at a time, testing each.

As for you core modifications you will have to go through them to make sure they will work on 1.4. It is a bad idea to modify core code as all upgrades will wipe out your changes.

If this doesn’t work you might want to try upgrading to 1.3, then to 1.4

Hi rajthegr8,

I’m in the same boat I need to upgrade my version of magento from 1.1.8 to the latest stable.
I’ve tried upgrading in connect manager yesterday the results were not pretty!
Any how I’ve just started on this path and was wondering how you are traveling with the upgrade process?

I am also searching for the best way to bring our site up to date from 1.1.8.  From what I’ve seen incremental upgrades appear to be best.  Any experienced users out there willing to walk us through?  Which versions should we avoid?
Tried to upgrade a staging store directly to the latest version (1.4.1.0, I believe) via SSH and got database errors.  I followed the instructions here:

@Brent

I am also trying to upgrade to 1.4 but from 1.1.6, however, i don’t quite understand your point #3

How do i go about installing 1.4 using my old database?

Do i do a fresh install of magento 1.4 on a clean db, remove the tales and import my 1.1.6 db?

Thanks

You are going to have to upgrade in increments, You should try upgrading to 1.3 (1.2 if you can find a copy)

My suggestion for a serious upgrade,

1) export your products out
2) install fresh copy
3) create attributes and sets
4) import products
5) reinstall theme
6) reinstall modules

and in that order. Warning import/export routines vary with results so depending on the version your upgrading from you may want to be take heed to serious headaches in your future.

oh and saying a little prayer before you get started may also help.

I am having difficulties in installing magento in my personal WP blog. It is so weird for me that I wasn’t able to fix enough. I need this to be done for my school presentation at cursos de idiomas en el extranjero this coming February. Thanks If someone who have step by by step installation guide please do share.
