After updating to 1.4.0.1 we now get a “Unable to Set Payment Method’ error message in the checkout after selecting the payment method and clicking continue. Error happens on both default and custom themes, does anybody have any pointers to where the problem is in the checkout code?

hi everybody. this theme seems to be a bit out of date, but maybe there are people still looking for same things, like me.

so, if you’ll run into this problem - I advice to not to try any street magic with moving you theme files there and back, but just look into magento logs to find out what the problem really is. So, in my case the thing was easy - mcrypt blowfish cipher algorithm was missing in configuration, so it was failing on runtime.

good luck everybody.

In the file: app/code/core/Mage/Checkout/controllers/OnepageController.php

comment the row:
//$result[’error’] = $this->__(’Unable to set Payment Method.’);

and write:
$result[’error’] = $e->getMessage();
instead

it will show you what exactly the problem

If you find this error message is appeared, you can try the following steps:

On your development server:

Navigate to /app/code/core/Mage/Checkout/controllers/OnepageController.php

Search for and replace

$result[’error’] = $this->__(’Unable to set Payment Method.’);
With
$result[’error’] = $e->getMessage();
Try the process again

NOTE:
In case you didn’t notice, you have just edited a CORE file. Please remember to undo your changes before publishing your changes.
