setup permissions to 777 for:
1.  “MEDIA” folder
2.  in MEDIA folder to “CATALOG” and “ TMP” and ALL subfolders individually.

even i have the same problem, i am using 1.3.2.4 version. I have made the folder permissions to 777 for Media and catalog and tmp folder inside it. Still the same problem. Any suggestions?

run this command, and your home free. i just solved the issue myself. this way is more efficient and expedient.

> chmod 777 -R media

Also, make sure you are inside the magento main directory, obviously…

I cannot change the permissions for those files I keep getting an error “Permission denied (SSH_FX_PERMISSION_DENIED: The user does not have sufficient permissions to perform the operation.). Which is crazy, this happened after upgrading to 1.4 . Please help!
