Let me give you an example. In my store I have layered navigation on price and it looks like the following:

1. $0.00 - $100.00 (2543)
2. $100.00 - $200.00 (65)
3. $200.00 - $300.00 (8)
4. $300.00 - $400.00 (4)

As you can see, $0-100 not much of a filtering option (it leaves most products available), but breaking down the prices into $100 increments is not very good. It probably should of been broken down like this since most products are between $5 and $50:

1. $0-$10
2. $10 - $20
3. $20 - 50
4. $50 - 100
5 $100 - $400

However, I understand that could be hard to make it that intelligent. So, I recommend that once a user selects a filter such as ($0.00 - $100.00) IF there is still a lot of products, then still allow then to filter based on price. For example, after they select $0.00 - $100.00 show them

1. $0-$20
2. $20 - $40
3. $40 - 60
4 $60 - 80
5 $80 - $100

I am also having this issue. I think it would be great to solve the fundamental problem and allow the admin to set what the price breaks are. Although even this could be a problem if you have a large number of products across a wide range of prices, so the solution suggested by ShopGuy would still be good to have.
