Hi everybody,
I have some questions about developing on magento :

- how can i add lightbox for the whole cart ? using scriptaculous or mootools ...
- I have no clue how to develop (request to the server sql, searching and displaying results, using tools provided by this application, ...) and where can i find some explanations, tips, or a glossary of the usefull command i can use. (i found a topic about low level queries, but i don’t know how, for exemple, i can make a filter like ‘price between x and y’)
- how can i configure a brand new frontend, with my style, images, and structure ?

I think others question will come out later.
Thanks for the answers smile

Thanks !
I search on the knowledge base with the word “designing” -> no answers.
I search on the knowledge base with the word “design” ->i find some results but none for my questions.

I was hoping that somebody will post some code line with example .... In fact, i have a main.xml, which determines the structure of the page (header, page, footer, with blocks), and i determined 2 structures, but i don’t know where i can set this structure to be my default structure, for most of my pages, and for one or two pages, set the other structure.

Help smile

Must read:

Start with the concept ( look for Ohminu’s post):

Also take a look at this thread, he’s created his own theme using Magento.  Looks like he barely even touched main.xml either.  But I don’t know what version of Magento he used.

To actually take a look at his template though I had to download the entire 50MB file he has hosted on his site.  The download link is either in the thread or on that test site.

Thanks a lot for all this answers !!!
I am now searching for the implementation of my frontend design, but i think im close to the solution, thanks to u smile

I still have problem in adjusting phtml files and xml files, to interact together, but, im pretty confident in finding the solution.
I have another problem, maybe you can help me :
I add a category in the administration, and i want this category to load another template (the 2 columns-left.phtml) with 4 of my modules on the left side. The problem is that i can’t see in my page the block of my left side menu. How do i proceed ??

Thanks a lot again smile

If I understand your question correctly: that you have successfully loaded the 2 column_left template (meaning you can choose the template from the admin), and you want to add something on the left side of that 2 column_left template. Well, you can’t do it from the admin (category and cms). I think it’s possible in the future release, but not now. Right now you can only add your content in the “content” area.

The CMS I know that can do this is Modx CMS, it’s called Template Variable. Very powerful feature!

In category edit page you should have ‘Custom Layout Update’ textarea in the bottom under ‘Page Layout’.
‘Page Layout’ you set to “Column on the left” and ‘Custom Layout Update’ to:

<reference name="left">
    <
block type="your/block1" name="your.block1" template="template/foryourblock1.phtml"/>
    <
block type="your/block2" name="your.block2" template="template/foryourblock2.phtml"/>
</
reference>

Thanks for the reply smile
I have a question concerning what you wrote :

<reference name="left">
<block type="your/block1" name="your.block1" template="template/foryourblock1.phtml"/>
<block type="your/block2" name="your.block2" template="template/foryourblock2.phtml"/>
</reference>

what does type reffer to ? i shouldn’t put “core/template” ? i can put anything i want in the type attribute ??

This may or may not answer your question completely, but it will give you some more useful information:

http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/how-to/designing/designing-for-magento#layout_blocks (there is a lot more stuff above and below that section of page)
