I have a pretty good site (I think) and have been trying to get my SEO up for a while, with no progress. I am not an expert, maybe I am doing something wrong, but I wonder if anyone has had good results getting their search rankings up with Magento?
Please remember the toolbar PR you are quoting in this thread has NO significance on rankings for your particular keywords.
So just beacuse a site is PR 4 does not mean it will automatically rank higher than a PR 3 site for a given keyword.
Search engines rank pages not sites (although there is some thoughts that the site theme plays some part).
The single biggest factor to improve rankings for a given page / keyword is to get inbound links with keyword targeted anchor text to that PAGE.
Toolbar PR is only updated very infrequently these days and although it is a benchmark as a quick judge it is a pretty useless benchmark when it is so out of date compared to the real pagerank (never revealed).
having said that - nice list of sites in this thread
and we have no hesitation in stating that magento is a great platform to start building your SEO efforts on - but it does need some changes to the default theme / setup.
I have emailed 40 sites suggesting my link, any no one replies...... why is that? any ideas
To answer your questions:
1. Smart copywriting improves page rank by embedding common search terms into the content itself. Due to the old practice of META keyword spamming, in which a site would list tons of keywords that had no bearing on its materials, many search engines started comparing the META keywords to the actual content in the pages. So, the trick is to figure out what keywords you want the site to come up under, use them as your META keywords, and write your content to include as many of them as is possible.
2. Because most people don’t engage in reciprocal linking. When my site was running back in the early 2000’s, I frequently had people emailing me asking me to put up links to their site with the promise of a link-back. Back then, I didn’t see the benefit to it, other than a link back from a site that had very low traffic. In this day and age, I’m even less-inclined to do such things—it would be much easier to simply buy Google Adwords.
I see people posting rankings. But ranking for what?
If it’s a obscure term it’d be easy rank #1 for that matter. If they’re selling an item that many other people are also selling and they rank #1 that would mean a lot.
So with these rankings… what phrase are you at that ranking for?
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there does it make a sound? Does it matter?
If you rank #1 on a phrase that’s not making you money and bringing you visitors it probably doesn’t matter.
page rank is a guide towards the quality of the page, but that is all. No-one should be making decisions about how successful their site is on page rank alone, in essence i agree with what iamdave is saying, however, Fontosaurus does have a point even if a little misguided - replacing what used to be meta keyword stuffing for body copy stuffing, - shame on you
SEO - is Simple, you do not require a maths degree to work what is ultimately just common sense

Let’s compare some real tough stuff that matters.

Dave,
Here the page rank does not mean for any key word, that is different. Google ranks all the websites with page rank ranging from n/a, 0-10, page rank 10 means highest, means a very good website (www.google.com). and new bebsites will be n/a or gray bar. over a period of time once you build more quality back links and great content your web site ranking will go up. Do not get confused with ranking for a particular keyword vs website page rank. If you want to see your sites page rank download google toolbar and you can see a green bar on the tool bar which tells you what the page rank is.
