Orders vs. Sales, Reports don’t match Dashboard (or reality)

I just started testing the checkout portion of my Magento 1.1.6 site. There seems to be several problems with the orders and reporting.
My setup is that I am the only customer in the database. I tried the checkout as guest in 3 different ways, none of which involved an actual payment. My products are all configurable products with the simple product just supplying the size, no price or image. The shopping cart is showing the correct price and image.

What I see on the Dashboard:
Lifetime Sales— amount for 2 orders
Last 5 Orders— shows 3 guest orders with 1 item each
Orders and Amounts graphs—shows 2 orders
BestSeller—list shows the simple product once with a quantity of 3
Most Viewed Products—shows 5 configurable products
New Customers—shows me with 0 orders
Customers—shows No records found

What I see in Reports:
Sales Report—No records found
Total Invoiced—No records found
Products in Carts—shows both configurable and simple products, one simple product shows 3 orders, rest 0
Bestsellers—No records found
Most Viewed—No records found
Customers New Accounts—No records found
Customers by orders total—No records found
Customers by number of orders—No records found

What I see in Sales:
Orders— 3 orders: 2 Pending Paypal and 1 Pending, Items ordered shows correct mix of configurable and simple information
Invoices—No records found

Is there just a mixup of terminology between “sales” and “orders” and “invoices”? Since I did not complete the transaction, I got no email or invoice created.
Is there an easy way to clear out the residue left by abandoned orders?
I think there are some bugs here. At the very least, the information on the reports should match the dashboard (I thought they called the same code...).  How does anyone use this in a live store with problems like these?

Has anyone determined the difference between orders and sales?  And how is a quote different?
I’d like to get my reports at least matching each other, but I don’t know where to start.

I think a quote is sending a quote to a potential customer, not yet placed. (The 100 Red shirts would be $10 each)
Order is placed by a customer (I want 100 Red Shirts @ $10 each)
Sales is the amount of revenue that you took in ($1000)

Does this help at all?

Best,

Matt

Thanks, that makes logical sense, but the code doesn’t treat it that way.
From what I read in the code, a quote is all the order information written to a single database table. Sales and Orders are the same thing. Some orders are paid for and some are not. If they are, they are Invoiced.
